5-Reps: Paper towel, connecting with clients, and trading time for money

Happy 5-Reps Friday!

Moving on, here are 2 coaching concepts, 2 business nuggets, and a quote to consider this week.

2 Coaching Concepts

Meet your clients where they are. Here’s where many of them are:

  1. They have a problem.
  2. They’ve had this problem before.
  3. They want it to go away (quickly and easily).
  4. They don’t think they know what to do.
  5. They’re nervous about fitting it into their busy life.
  6. Everybody’s yelling, telling them they can help, and they don’t know who to believe.

The process of achieving anything meaningful can be so agonizingly slow that you’d wonder if it’s even happening at all. Slowness is completely normal. That doesn’t help our mindset. The Paper Towel Analogy does a good job of putting hard to see positive movement into perspective.

Imagine that with every positive action you rip off a sheet of paper towel. Technically, every sheet is equal. It doesn’t seem that way though. When the roll is new, it’s fat. 3-4 sheets go around it. So removing one sheet doesn’t appear to do much.

As you keep going, the roll gets thinner and the sheets appear to have more of an impact. By the time you get near the end of the roll, one sheet might go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in the reality, the results are the same. What’s different is your perspective.

2 Business Nuggets

Your business priority sequence (in order):

  1. Make your product or service good enough to sell; not perfect.
  2. Sell it to somebody.
  3. Once it sells, take in feedback and make it better.
  4. Sell it to more people.
  5. At some point (maybe) do all the other business stuff like make a logo. Or, don’t.

2.

Most people are better off trading time for money, getting paid up front, and just increasing their value versus chasing influencer status, mythical scalable productization, or passive revenue.

Yes, you should trade your time for money. But your time should cost a lot. If you’ve found work that is meaningful and fulfilling to you, you should do that work.
