5-Reps: Outgrowing friends, exercise order, and waypoints

Happy 5-Reps Friday!

Moving on, here are 2 fitness concepts, 2 business nuggets, and a quote to consider this week.

2 Fitness Tips

1.

Exercise order matters. Follow this framework:

– Explosive movements (jumps, throws, sprints)

– Main strength movement (squat, clean, bench, etc.)

– Main assistance movement (RDL, lunge, row, etc.)

– Accessory work / trunk

Fast first when fresh. Heave before fatigued. Finish with the pump.

2.

Be careful not to judge someone’s form or performance in the gym.

You have no idea where they started, how much they improved, and how hard they’ve been working on it.

Same goes for their physique too.

2 Business Nuggets

1.

Systems are consistent, reliable, and fluid.

System-oriented thinking views goals as beacons––something to aim towards. They provide direction, moving you forward in the correct broad direction.

Achievements should be viewed as waypoints, a part of a greater journey, and not endpoints, the end of one journey and beginning of another. The key thing about systems is that they focus on a set of behaviors, not outcomes, and anticipate ups and down because nobody is perfect and we have to account for that.

2.

Fail better, faster.

1 Quote to Consider

“On your journey, there will be resistance. You’ll outgrow friends. Your family won’t understand. This is fine. Working backwards from the life you want to make your dream a reality is hard but I think that you’ll be happier for the trouble.”

When I live in Mexico my body becomes 80% taco, 18% jackfruit, 1.9% topo chico, and a random smattering of everything else. I’m not mad. Just reporting.
