5 Reps: Moneywise pod, rickshaw rides, and a good book on your nightstand

Greetings from Osaka, Japan. It’s golden week here. The kids are off of school. We decided to take a little trip and, tbh, got overly-ambitious with the travel. My advice: Do not take ten train trips with three young kids over two days––especially during the busiest week of the year. Regardless, we’ve had some special moments like this rickshaw ride through a bamboo forest in Kyoto.

I’m in a season of family and fitness. As a result, I’ve turned down the last 30 podcast interview requests. But last week, I agreed to appear on one of my favorite podcasts.

On the recent Moneywise podcast, I broke down my full net-worth, how much I spend each year. It’s the first time I’ve ever spoken in specifics about money and investing this way. You can listen on any podcast app or on YouTube. Search the Moneywise podcast or click the link here.

Next, here are a few short thoughts this week.

“I never really had one of these big dreams. I advocate passionate dedication to the pursuit of short-term goals. Be micro-ambitious.”

Being successful is realizing that if you’ve got time to exercise, people who love you to come home to, and a book on your nightstand, you’ve got it all.

Warming up properly before you lift is one of those things everybody knows that they should do but most don’t; kinda like reading the 37-page long terms and conditions before signing every ounce of your privacy away to a Chinese tech company just because you want to see how you’re going to look in 50 years.

2

The most powerful and preventative medical drug for heart disease, diabetes, and dementia costs nothing but time and effort.

It’s called exercise. And society still treats it like it’s optional.

What you see becomes your reality even if it isn’t important or valuable. When you’re in a petri dish, even if you know it’s a stupid dish, a part of you will always crave acceptance in that microbial colony. You’re an adult now. You get to decide where you exist and who to surround yourself with. Choose wisely.

A few things or people I like and recommend

David Epstein’s new book, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make us Better just came out. I loved Epstein’s previous book, Range. It’s been 7 years since that came out. When I saw the concept of this one, I immediately cold emailed David and asked to order 50 copies. The book’s fantastic. Grab a copy on Amazon, or wherever you get books. (Amazon USA link)

Get Unhinged Habits Now

My newest book, Unhinged Habits, is a mix between Essentialism, 4,000 Weeks, Vagabonding, and Atomic Habits with more focus on the deeper values of health, exploration, and adult friendship.

It makes the argument that consistency without seasonal bouts of intensity is ineffective. That, like cardio and weights, we need both.
