5 Reps: Lifting consistently, a good reminder, and the difference between an audience and a community

Before we begin, a quick note that I cancelled the Kickstarter for the book I’m writing about getting $1.6 million stolen a few weeks back.

I think that I released the Kickstarter campaign more as a trauma response.

Don’t think I realized the trauma of what happened to.

Instead, I defaulted to productivity.

In a weird way, If I’m doing stuff, I don’t have to think or feel. I started to write the book last weekend long-hand in a notebook and it made me realize that that needs to be my focus, not marketing a kickstarter. More info here.

Next, here are a few short thoughts this week.

Money

1

If you’re looking for a new workspace, consider the public library.

-Don’t have to spend $7 on lattes just to rent a chair.
-Stay all day without death stares from baristas.
-Forced quiet and positive peer pressure.
-Spread out at big tables.
-Bring your own food.
-Free wi-fi.

2

Shortly after I found out about losing $1.6 million in a major worldwide cybersecurity incident, I imagined what a blessed life was:

One where I got to read books, exercise, go for walks, be with my kids, and collect baseball cards.

I was already living that life. It was a good reminder.

Health

1

“Lifting consistently for fifty years, I must be a substantially together and well-rounded person, indeed. Hardly. I can only guess what a mess I’d be without it.”

-Dave Draper

2

People who train for looks burn out, because looks are for other people. External motivation never lasts. If you want to stay at the gym for decades, figure out what internal motivations will keep you there – whether it’s keeping up with your kids, setting the right example, sharpening your brain, or something entirely different.

Relationships

1

“The difference between an audience and a community is which way the chairs are facing.”

-Chris Brogan
