5 Reps: Going home, exercise, and ignoring what is expected of you

Before we begin, here’s an article published by Kit.com about how I optimized for fun on my last book launch by focusing on newsletters.

Next, a few short thoughts this week.

Money

1

Counterintuitively, the more you write a book for one person and one person only, the more it will appeal to everybody.

(^^This goes for any product or service you want to sell, btw.)

2

When I launched my last book, choosing a single promotional channel made everything else easier.

Because newsletters were my only focus, it was obvious who to network with, what events to host, what talent to hire, and what asks to make of people when they said “let me know how I can help”.

If I’d been splitting my attention across podcasts, newsletters, interviews, and social campaigns simultaneously, I never could have built a clear, high-quality team or gone deep on any of it. Constraints force clarity.

Even if another channel might be marginally better for someone else’s book launch, consider what single-channel focus does for your energy, your team, and your ability to actually execute.

Focus is a strategy in itself.

“to live life well you need to know when to ignore what is expected of you. Even if it means breaking the rules.”

Relationships

1

The best thing you can do for your marriage is to make health and fitness something you build together.

Walk after dinner.
Work out side by side, even if workouts look different.
Cook food together.
Sign up for the race together.
Remind each other to drink water.
Tell them they look strong. Mean it.

You can literally just do healthy things together. And the more you do, the deeper your connection.

P.S. This is the last note I’m writing to you from Japan. After six months abroad (Bali / Japan), our family’s going home on Sunday.

Japan especially was a challenging 3 months that’s led to a tremendous amount of growth for us individually and our family. Alison and I were forced to level up as parents and spouses. Happy for the lessons, stronger for them, and happy to be going home.
