5-Reps: Ethical dilemmas, fitness tourism, and which deadlift is best

Happy 5-Reps Friday!

Here’s what’s new this week.

Obvious Choice Podcast Episodes:

*If you only listen to one, make it this one.

Moving on, here are 2 fitness concepts, 2 business nuggets, and a quote to consider this week.

2 Fitness Tips

1.

Be a fitness tourist.

Hire coaches from other disciplines and drop in on random classes.

You learn by doing. Explore your physicality. Don’t stick to one way of training forever.

2.

The fitter version of you is more focused, confident, and relaxed. They’re less anxious, stressed, and sick. This person is a better parent, a higher quality partner, and has more energy for their loved ones.

Become that person.

2 Business Nuggets

1.

I struggle with both envy and jealousy. I’m aware that some people look at me and envy what I’ve built. By the same token, I look at others and envy them. What I’ve learned is that it’s OK to admire what somebody else has without desiring the life that they have had to live in order to get it.

2.

A friend named David who wrote a book about weightlifting was once asked what deadlift was best. “Different shit is different.” He replied.

Physically, people are different. Financially, people are different too. There’s no ‘best’ way to do this business thing. Your needs and wants and desires are different from mine. Not better or worse; different.

If somebody has different time horizons, aspirations, family circumstances, and a willingness to work hard––or not work hard––than you, good advice for them is different from you. Figure out what your values and priorities are. Only then can you navigate the noise.

Perhaps this is why the difference between what experts tell you to do and what they do themselves can be simultaneously jarring and perfectly OK.

1 Quote to Consider

“You will find your own ethical dilemmas in all parts of your lives, both personal and professional.

We all have different desires and needs, but if we don’t discover what we want from ourselves and what we stand for, we will live passively and unfulfilled.

We define ourselves by our actions. With each decision, we tell ourselves and the world who we are. Think about what you want out of this life, and recognize that there are many kinds of success.” – Bill Watterson (Creator: Calvin and Hobbes)

Handed in the manuscript for The Obvious Choice book. Took a trip to Oaxaca with my Dad. Ate tacos. Been a good few weeks. Back at the content grind now. Gonna focus on social media and email list growth again. And also eat tacos every day . . . obviously.
